OSHA's construction respirator rule, 29 CFR 1926.103, applies the same requirements as the general industry standard, 29 CFR 1910.134. One of those requirements: before you wear a respirator on the job, a physician or other licensed health care professional (PLHCP) has to determine that you are medically able to use one.
That evaluation is the respirator medical clearance. It comes before your fit test and before you wear the respirator in any situation where your employer requires it. It is the same OSHA requirement whether you are wearing a disposable N95 for dust or a full-face respirator.
Clearance is not a fit test. A fit test checks that a specific respirator seals to your face. Medical clearance checks that you can safely breathe through one. You need clearance first — that is the part we provide.
Your employer's hazard assessment decides which respirator you wear. These are the common situations where construction workers are told to get cleared:
Dust from concrete, brick, block, and stone. Often handled with a disposable N95 or a half-face respirator with P100 filters, depending on the task and controls.
Dust and debris from tear-out work. Depending on what is being disturbed, your employer may require a half-face or full-face respirator.
Fine dust from joint compound sanding — a common reason crews are issued N95s.
Vapors from sealers, adhesives, and solvent-based products, usually handled with a half-face respirator and chemical cartridges.

Yes, when the respirator is required by the employer. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.103 applies the 1910.134 respiratory protection requirements to construction, and 1910.134 requires a medical evaluation by a PLHCP before you are fit tested or use the respirator on the job.
Your certificate is issued to you, not to a single employer, and it is valid for 12 months. Each employer decides what it accepts for its respiratory protection program; the QR code lets a new supervisor verify your clearance instantly.
Under OSHA 1910.134, the employer is responsible for the cost of required respirator medical evaluations. Many workers get cleared on their own to start sooner; you get a receipt you can submit to your employer for reimbursement.
Most workers finish in 10-15 minutes and are approved instantly. If any answer needs a closer look, a medical professional reviews it, typically within 24 hours.
