Why welders and blasters need medical clearance

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requires a medical evaluation by a physician or other licensed health care professional (PLHCP) before any worker is fit tested or uses a required respirator. On construction sites, 1926.103 applies the same rule.

The requirement covers every required respirator, from a disposable N95 used for light fume to a full-face respirator. Clearance comes first; the fit test and training follow.

Welding and blasting work where respirators come up

Your employer's hazard assessment and exposure monitoring decide what you wear. Common situations:

Welding fume

Fume from welding and cutting, especially in enclosed spaces or on stainless and coated metals. Often handled with particulate respirators (N95 or P100) or a respirator under the welding hood.

Grinding and metal prep

Metal dust and grinding debris before and after welding.

Abrasive blasting

Blasting usually calls for an abrasive-blasting respirator — typically a supplied-air hood. Your employer's program sets the exact equipment.

Check your respirator type

In the questionnaire you select the respirator you will use: disposable N95-type, half-facepiece, full-facepiece, or SCBA. If your job uses a supplied-air blasting hood or a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR), check with your employer before you buy.

Welder and sandblaster respirator clearance FAQ

Where can a welder or sandblaster get respirator medical clearance the same day?

Online. Complete the OSHA Appendix C questionnaire in about 10-15 minutes; most workers are approved instantly and download their certificate and wallet card right away. If any answer needs a closer look, a medical professional reviews it, typically within 24 hours.

Do welders need a medical evaluation to wear a respirator?

Yes, when the respirator is required by the employer. OSHA 1910.134 requires a medical evaluation before fit testing or use, and that includes respirators worn for welding fume.

Is medical clearance the same as a fit test?

No. Medical clearance confirms you can safely wear a respirator; a fit test checks that a specific tight-fitting respirator seals to your face. You need the clearance first.

How much does it cost?

$22 for a new clearance and $19 to renew. There are no other fees. Under OSHA, the employer is responsible for this cost, so you get a receipt you can submit for reimbursement.
