Get cleared before you put on the half-face
Spraying, sanding, or working with solvent-based coatings? If your employer requires a respirator, OSHA requires a medical evaluation first. Do it online in about 15 minutes, reviewed by a licensed healthcare professional (PLHCP).
Renewal only $19
Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 (and 1926.103 on construction sites), any worker who is required to wear a respirator has to be medically evaluated before being fit tested or using it. That applies to a half-face respirator with organic vapor cartridges just as much as it does to a disposable N95.
Tight-fitting respirators make your lungs and heart work harder, and cartridge respirators add breathing resistance. The medical evaluation — the OSHA Appendix C questionnaire reviewed by a PLHCP — confirms you can safely wear one for the work you do.
Medical clearance is not a fit test. You need clearance first, then a fit test on the specific make, model, and size of respirator you will wear.
Your employer's hazard assessment decides which respirator and cartridges you wear. These are the situations painters are most often told to get cleared for:
Paint mist and solvent vapor. Usually a half-face or full-face respirator with organic vapor cartridges and particulate prefilters.
Two-part urethanes and some automotive and industrial coatings contain isocyanates. Respirator selection for these is stricter and is set by your employer's program — follow it.
Dust from sanding old coatings and patching compounds, often handled with an N95 or P100 filters.
Vapors from thinners, strippers, and cleaning solvents in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.

Yes, if the employer requires the respirator. OSHA 1910.134 requires a medical evaluation by a PLHCP before a worker is fit tested or uses a required respirator, including half-face and full-face cartridge respirators used for spray painting.
You select your respirator type in the questionnaire: disposable N95-type, half-facepiece, full-facepiece, or SCBA. Half-face and full-face cartridge respirators are what most painters use.
No. Medical clearance confirms you can safely wear a respirator. A fit test checks that a specific respirator seals to your face. You need clearance before the fit test.
Your certificate is valid for 12 months from the date of issue. We email you before it expires, and renewals are $19.
